"He [Artemis] kept the existence of the People quiet only so that he could continue to exploit them over the years, which he did on several occasions. His one mistake was leaving Captain Short alive. Holly became the LEP's foremost expert in the Artemis Fowl cases, and was invaluable in the fight against the People's most feared enemy. This fight was to continue across several decades." —Dr. J. Argon, Artemis Fowl, Book 1, Epilogue

I'm sure that when we first read this, we had no doubt that the following Artemis Fowl novels would consist of the conflict mentioned in the file. But two years from the events at the Fowl Manor siege, Artemis seems to have made amends with the People, and changed his ways from kidnappings to helping them protect the Eighth Family from being discovered by humans. But is it the end? If The Opal Deception is any indication to how quickly things can change, will circumstances turn Artemis once more into an antagonist to the LEP? Did Eoin not-so-accidentally let slip a hint to the dark and brooding future of the criminal mastermind, or is this simply nothing more than a mistake, a change in direction of the overall plot?

I for one like to think of it as a premonition of things to come. Perhaps Artemis will change as he grows older, and begin the decades of conflict mentioned in Argon's file. I hope the story will be told throughout many of Eoin's future stories, and keep all of us on our toes. What say you?

Good point...

Eoin probably said that thinking we would all forget it (which we did except you of course) and then make it look like he back for good, and then the eighth book, Artemis will turn out to be a bad boy.

Maybe, long after the eighth book! The more the better, right?

Ya, that would be better but he said the 8th one would be the last one.

But then again, he also had said the 7th one is the last one...

So it might go on that would be epic.

But Artemis was so awesome evil.  I still have visions of him sitting in a big leather chair at twelve years old with his fingers steepled and smirking at everyone around him.  The picture has to be taken at a low angle too.

I kwym - I totally loved him as that little attitude-y squirt with a big brain . . . but he's outgrown that image, I believe. He couldn't revert back to it. At least - not completely. I do think he could easily go back to thinking up devious criminal schemes but he would still have to have those personal affiliations toward his friends to kind of combat that coldness.
