Artemis fowl is definately my number one.
My other close favorites (as in the first ones I recommend)
2. Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris
3. Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan (Oh, Fowl, the movie looks so awesome!)
4. Maximum Ride by James Patterson (actually anything by  him, pretty much)
5. Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling
6. Nightworld by L.J. Smith
 et cetera

Believe me, if you want good series to occupy your time, these are perfect. I can't stop rereading any of them! (except maybe 5 + 6)

 Shocked Maximum Ride is great! Apart from the Final Warning which was pretty bad.
